London, 1943, scarce 1st edition. 222 pp, 32 b/w photos, 4 maps. Black cloth hardcover with nearly unchipped dust jacket (see photo). The book has an neat inscription and date on endpaper, and a slightly faded spine, else Fine. This book came out during WW2, and the people must have been crazy for reading about climbing. It had had 4 reprints very quickly. To find a 1st edition with such a nice clean dust jacket is uncommon. This small wartime book tells of Shipton's greatest adventures. [Neate S68.] The book was very popular; it was one of the few mountaineering books published during WWII, and had 4 printings. The first printing is by far the scarcest printing. There are some climbs of Shipton's that never got a full book, and he wrote about in this book and Land of Tempest in the 1960s. Like the Alps, Ruwenzori, Kilimanjaro and climbing a new route on Mount Kenya. Meeting Tilman in Africa, etc. It even has some chapters on Everest, Nanda Devi and their the Blank on the Map escapade. Shipton began climbing in the Alps. In 1928 he went to Kenya as a coffee grower, and first climbed Nelion, a peak of Mount Kenya, in 1929. It was also in Kenya's community of Europeans that he met his future climbing partners Bill Tilman and Percy Wyn-Harris. Together with Wyn-Harris and Tilman, he climbed the twin peaks of Mount Kenya. In 1931, with Frank Smythe, Shipton was the among the first climbers to stand on the summit of Kamet (7816 metres), the highest peak climbed at that time. Shipton explored the 'Blank on the Map' north of the Karakoram with Tilman. Shipton was involved with most of the Mount Everest expeditions during the 1930s and later, including the unheralded but very successful 1935 Mt Everest expedition.
