Detailed Product Description
MULTIPLE COPIES AVAILABLE

2008, 1st edition. In March of 2007, four women traveled to northern Ethiopia to climb virgin sandstone towers in the Horn of Africa. They explored rock monoliths in a region that is best known for the drought and famine of the 1980’s and was the site of one of the bloodiest massacres of the Derg.  Vertical Ethiopia is the narrative of their journey. Told through a series of vignettes that reveal what it means to climb, to travel, and to explore, Vertical Ethiopia looks closely at the intersections between adventure and culture, history and opportunity, and sky and sandstone. Large format hardcover, DJ, almost New.

Extra postage required for Priority or International Mail.

Vertical Ethiopia is not your typical Africa story—it is about an all-female team coming to know another country via climbing cracks that fade into red and orange summit blocks of solidified sand.  Add to this the allure of Ethiopia itself, one of the oldest Christian nations at the brink of becoming either the new adventure playground or yet another country eclipsed by Muslim/Christian tension.

Listed by Frommers as one of the “Top 12 Travel Destinations for 2007,” Ethiopia is trying to excavate itself from a legacy of famine, drought, and communism. Vertical Ethiopia reveals the country at a turning point in its embrace of its natural heritage. Using climbing as a magnifying glass, Majka Burhardt comes to understand a land brimming with striking geological and cultural beauty. Gabe Rogel captures this process, and contextualizes it, through his photographs. Burhardt’s narrative reveals the challenges of climbing and of Ethiopia, and her and her team’s exploration become your own, as the red sandstone opens onto the endless African horizon.

Majka Burhardt is a writer, climber, and guide living in Boulder, Colorado. Her non-fiction work has appeared in various magazines, including Men’s Health, Climbing, Women’s Adventure, and Patagonia. She has an BA in anthropology from Princeton University and a MFA in creative writing from the Warren Wilson Program for Writers, and is currently completing her first novel.

Gabe Rogel is a professional photographer living in Driggs, Idaho. His work has appeared in National Geographic Adventure, Outside, Skiing, and Climbing. He often shoots for Marmot Mountain Ltd. and Patagonia Inc.

“Majka Burhardt and Gabe Rogel know adventure, and through my years working with them at Climbing Magazine I’ve come to relish their eyes for story and for exploration. Vertical Ethiopia harnesses those talents in the rarest way, marrying the stark beauty of northern Ethiopia’s spires and extraordinary people with the pair’s vast, empathetic vision.”
-- Matt Samet, Editor, Climbing Magazine

“In her new book, writer, climber, guide and nouveau renaissance woman Majka Burhardt offers a fresh take on a timeless land. The Horn of Africa has never looked so good.”

-- Pete Takeda, author of Eye at the Top of the World.
