Edinburgh and London, 1845, 2nd revised edition. 456 pp, 9 lithographed plates including colored lithograph frontis, other illus, 6 maps including large folding map at end, 4 of which are colored, index (including a magnificent foldout map of the Mer de Glace in 1842). This copy has been rebound on leather with marbled boards and was quite handsome. Hoiwever, both higes are broken so the cover is detached. An easy job for a bookbinder. This copy was bound with a leather spine with gold letters, leather corners, Marbled paper on both the cover and inside cover of the covered boards. The corners all show some rubbing, and both front and rear hinge are not attached. The interior has no foxing, stains or writing. There is a bookplate inside the front cover dated 1929. Overall Good, or Near Fine with a new hinges. Considered one of the landmark studies of the Alps, both geologically and for early travels and climbs. Forbes was one of the first scientist-climbers, and made the first British ascent of a virgin Alpine peak. 'Regarded as the father of British mountaineering, the distinguished Scottish scientist was the first British mountaineer to engage in a series of expeditions in the Alps. Travels Through the Alps was the first book in English which described a series of Alpine climbs'. 'Forbes was a Scottish scientist and traveler. He made many observations and mountain expeditions in the Alps, Norway and Dauphine. His books are the first English accounts of systematic Alpine exploration and description of various regions.' He made the fourth (first British) ascent of the Jungfrau and the first British ascent of the Stockhorn. His observations on glaciers made during his expeditions to the Alps and Norway led him to conclude that a glacier moves faster than the ice beneath it, and that the velocity of a glacier increases directly with the steepness of its bed. These conclusions involved Forbes in some controversy with John Tyndall and others however he was undoubtedly the first to obtain accurate measurements, and to establish a definite base for future theories. Forbes also made the fourth (first British) ascent of the Jungfrau and the first British ascent of the Stockhorn. The first edition is quite scarce, with only a few copies listed on the internet, at higher prices. (2015).
