Detailed Product Description

2000, 1st edition. 304 pp, 490 color, 200 b/w photos, maps, ills. The great climbs of history are described: Everest, K2, Ruwenzori, Matterhorn with stories of the great climbers: Messner, Bonatti, Mummery, Duke of the Abruzzi.

A fabulous celebration of the mountains. Brand new large format hardcover with Dust Jacket.

A collector's book for climbers and armchair adventurers. Large-format, full-color pictorials of the world's highest peaks. Vast fields of ice and slender limestone towers, slim crests of snow and massive granite columns. From Everest to Mont Blanc, from Patagonia to the Dolomites, the highest and most impressive peaks on earth have always challenged and attracted humans. With a blend of dramatic color photographs, historical black-and-white images, and early paintings and illustrations of the world's most illustrious peaks, this large-format volume brings together the greatest adventures that have been undertaken in the mountains since the ancient Greeks made their first forays to Mount Olympus.

All the biggest names in climbing and the highest mountains are here. In illustrating the adventures of such climbers as Mummery, the Duke of the Abruzzi, Bonatti, and Messner, this lavish volume also reveals that now, as always, the primary elements in any attempt on the most difficult peaks are the individual's courage, intelligence, and fear.

This stunning volume highlights the best of mountaineering history with striking color photos and illuminating text.A collector’s book for climbers and armchair adventurers Large-format, full-color pictorials of the world’s highest peaksVast fields of ice and slender limestone towers, slim crests of snow and massive granite columns. Kurt Diemberger (born 1932 in Austria), is the only remaining person alive that has made the first ascents on two mountains over 8,000 metres. In 1957, he made the first ascent of Broad Peak and in 1960, the first ascent of Dhaulagiri. Diemberger was also the last person to see Hermann Buhl alive before he fell through a cornice on Chogolisa. Diemberger was one of only two survivors in the 1986 K2 Disaster. On August 4, 1986, Diemberger and Julie Tullis reached the summit of K2 very late in the day. Shortly after starting their descent, Julie fell -- dragging Diemberger with her. Fortunately, they somehow stopped from going over the edge and spent the night above 8,000 metres. They managed to reach Camp IV the next day, where they were forced to share a tent with six other climbers after their tent had collapsed from hurricane force winds. Unfortunately, Julie died later that night, possibly from HACE, and only one other of climbers survived the descent with Diemberger. Diemberger is still active in the mountaineering world and works on film projects with his daughter.
