Biography of Leslie Stephen, 1832-1904, best remembered as Virginia Woolf's father. Author of one of the great classics of mountaineering, THE PLAYGROUND OF THE ALPS. Sir Leslie Stephen, historian of thought, man of letters, and Alpinist, who spent his life in the mainstream of one of the richest periods of English intellectual history. Sir Leslie (1832-1904) was one of the most outspoken and prominent literary men of the 19th century. He was an athlete, mountain climber, mathematician, ordained priest (until 1875), journalist, editor, author, scholar and man of letters as well as a Rationalist and agnostic and the father of two famous daughters (Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell Calloway). In his later years he edited the 26 volume Dictionary of National Biography of which no less than 378 articles came from his own pen! He once remarked that he'd never lost his faith-- he had never had any. Mountaineering Stephen was one of the most prominent figures in the golden age of alpinism (the period between Wills's ascent of the Wetterhorn in 1854 and Whymper's ascent of the Matterhornin 1865) during which many major alpine peaks saw their first ascents.Joining the Alpine Club in 1857 (the year of its formation), Stephen made the first ascent, usually in the company of his favourite Swiss guide Melchior Anderegg, of the following peaks: Wildstrubel � 11 September 1858 with T.
