London, 1969, 1st edition. 279 pp, b/w illustrations. Blue cloth hardcover with dust jacket. Fine condition. The ''Definitive biography written by Mallory's son-in-law.'' The primary source for information on Mallory for 40 years. Biography of the great mountaineer and all-around swell fellow (and possible first-conqueror of Everest, although the question is still debated), written by his son-in-law, who had access to all the family papers, and was thus able to follow his life "from boyhood in Cheshire and at Winchester, through years from 1905 to 1909 at Cambridge and the years of school mastering at Charterhouse, to a happy marriage, service in the First World War, and participation in the Everest Expeditions of the Twenties." It was on the last of the latter, in 1924, that he and his climbing partner Andrew Irvine disappeared. Mallory's frozen body was rediscovered 75 years later, and his exploits have been re-told and re-examined many times since. David Robertson was co-editor of the American Alpine Journal for several years, and was an English professor at Princeton University. He was also married to George Mallory's oldest daughter Clare.
