UK, 2012, 2nd Revised & Updated Edition. 248 pp, 258 color and 28 b/w photos. This is a terrific update to Sale and John Cleare’s earlier work ‘On Top of the World/Climbing the World’s 14 Highest Mountains’ published in 2000. Each of the 14 8000m peaks has a chapter with a brief historical overview followed by focus on events of the last ten years. The photo selection is superb with many unique images, including the first summit photos taken on Gasherbrum II and Kangchenjunga. Tables, based on Jurgalski’s data, present first ascent information on new routes.  There are now 30 climbers who have climbed all the 8000 meter peaks, plus several who almost completed them but died on a climb.

 
This new book looks at the development of climbing on the world’s 14 highest mountains whose summits stand above the 8000 metre contour. Though concentrating on the new millennium, from 2000 to 2011, with an epilogue on 2011, the book also covers the first ascent of the mountains, and the new routes climbed between the first ascent and 1999. A sequel to CLIMBING THE WORLD'S 14 HIGHEST MOUNTAINS: THE HISTORY OF THE 8,000-METER PEAKS, published in 2000 which dealt with the discovery and early climbing history of the mountains, the book also uses new material which has come to light over the last decade to re-appraise the first ascents on Annapurna, Broad Peak and K2.

Illustrated with stunning images for the new routes established during the new millennium, the book also includes archival shots from the early history of the mountains. These archival shots include first ascent shots from two of the mountains which had not been made available for the earlier book.

The book is completed with data on the mountains provided by co-author Eberhard Jurgalski, who maintains the world’s most up-to-date database on these (and other) mountains. The data include all climbers who have summitted all 14 mountains (a figure which now stands at an astonishing 28) as well as those who are nearing the complete set. Sadly some of the latter have died in the attempt and will never achieve their goal.

These are the 14 8000 meter peaks: Mount Everest, K2, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Dhaulagiri, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Nanga Parbat, Annapurna, Gasherbrum I, Broad Peak, Shishapangma, Gasherbrum II.
 
Many of the 8,000m peaks, particularly the highest ones, were first climbed with supplementary oxygen. Today all except Everest are routinely climbed without, their ascent therefore making them a hazard for the climbers. Reinhold Messner, who became the first person to climb them all, took 16 years to climb all 14 mountains.
 
Though modern equipment and travel mean that it is now possible to climb several peaks in one season, since Messner's completion of the list in 1986,  29 more names have been added to it. One of the 8,000m peaks continue to be the pinnacle of a mountaineers career and in some cases the end -- Everest.
 
This book brings together the stories behind the conquest of every peak, plus the description of how they have been conquered since then. It is also a description of modern man's conquest of previously unscaled peaks, using advances in technology. As a description of heroic activity it has no equal.
