(In the past few years I have been reading several books about WWII in the Pacific, especially Operation Downfall, the incredible story of the invasion of Japan planned for Fall 1945 and Spring 1946. By that time the USA had a navy of thousands of ships. I have known for a long time that due to the Japanese invasion of the Philippines we lost our source of Manila Rope which was essential for ship handling even in the days of steam. I don't yet know what we did to replace Manila Rope. Did we grow it in Central America? Did we have Nylon in WWII? Of course we also lost our access to rubber, a much greater problem. When I started rock climbing in the Gunks in 1962 I was told that some climbers there still used Manila rope.)
