Detailed Product Description
The Chouinard Piolets were actually made by a large Italian climbing equipment company named Camp. REI contracted with them to copy the Chouinard Piolets and market them only through REI stores, showing only the Camp Logo, with the Bamboo handles, but without the Chouinard-Frost logo. We have two examples of this Chouinard-Frost Piolet Clone, (which I had never seen before) in brand new and unused condition. They are longer than the Chouinard axes, about 90 cm, making them more suitable for Glacier Walking. In the late 1960's the fertile minds of Tom Frost and Yvon Chouinard invented and created some of the msot innovative gear for rock and ice climbing ever devised. Their gear helped enable standards to be raised considerably. Where high level rock and ice climbing had been the province of a few elite climbers, mostly Europeans, by the 1970s great climbers were coming from everywhere. And if the climbers ice climbed, they used Chouinard Ice Axes and Crampons. Chouinard copied the steep drooping pick of European hand made axes, that planted firmly in hard ice or Neve, and made balance and esthetics primary. Chouinard and Frost first used hickory wood handles on their tools, but changed to laminated Bamboo in 1972 as it was believed to be lighter, stronger and provided a warmer, better grip than other materials. It was soon superceded by other materials, but the beauty of those early ice axes and tools have endured.
