2009. 196 pp, many photos. The Stonemasters: California Rock Climbers in the Seventies, chronicles the meteoric rise of a small band of Southern Californians who, beginning in the early 1970s, radically altered the course of world rock climbing, and virtually invented the gonzo culture of modern adventure sports. With over two-hundred historical photos, along with the landmark essays and stories of John Long (and others), The Stonemasters bring to life the legendary personalities, the victories and the tragedies that set the adventure revolution in motion.

The Stonemasters began as a loose federation of Southern Californian rock climbers, all in their teens, who drove the first wave of the adventure sports revolution through the 1970s. Criteria for being a Stonemaster was an ascent of “Valhalla,” then a seminal climbing route at Suicide Rock, in Idyllwild, California.

Core Stonemasters soon ventured to Yosemite Valley, the Canadian Rockies, Central and South America, Australia, England, The French Alps, and beyond, and in the process, redefined modern rock climbing and sparked a paradigm shift within adventure sports at large. From the start, The Stonemasters were a living ideal, an open invitation to embrace the biggest, the boldest, and the totally unknown. Never before or since has so small a group so radically impacted the way people thought, spoke, felt, acted, and dressed.

Over time, the Stonemasters moved from the granite walls of Yosemite to the great rivers and caves, glaciers and jungles of the world. From tow-in surfing in Baja, to trekking across Borneo, to crossing the North Pole, The Stonemasters have established a unique footprint in the wildest places on earth. StoneMaster Press is dedicated to bringing that wild world to the page in adventurous new ways and in all its amazing diversity. New large format hardcover with color pictorial cover and clear plastic Dust Jacket with title on the Dust Jacket. Our copies are SIGNED by authors and climbers John Long and Dean Fidelman, at no extra cost.
