What are mountains, how are they formed: the book begins by describing the many processes that can form them-folding and faulting, upthrust and erosion, ice as a sculptor of landscape, the creation of volcanoes. And then on to the enduring life of the mountains: the flora and fauna (he is particularly good about the animal life), and the mountain folk, self-contained, in-bred. Finally, the mythology of mountains, traditionally the homes of gods and gurus. John Jerome brings a lively mind and a persuasive pen to his theme.

His enthusiasm is infectious and he's a splendid populariser. He has been a mountain addict since he saw his first mountain, at the age of seventeen; his home now looks out on to the White Mountains of New Hampshire; and he finds the same compulsion in them as he finds in the Himalayas.
