Detailed Product Description
Philadelphia: Lippincott, OR Cleveland, Burrows; no date [ca. 1890]. Tall 8vo. 164+ 75 pp, 99 Whymper illustrations. Whymper relates his mountaineering activities in the Alps from 1860-69 including the first ascent of the Matterhorn. Well illustrated with Whymper's famous engravings, text in two column format.
 
Published with Lady Murphy's excursion on the Rhine River with engravings to boot. Original brown or Green cloth with mountain climbing vignette and titles on upper board. Gilt titles and silver and black vignette on spine. Cloth a little soiled as usual but still quite bright. Beveled edges. All edges gilt. Original brown cloth has edgewear, overall Good or Very Good.
 
This was probably the most common edition of Whymper's Scrambles that was published in the 19th century in the USA, possibly even more copies than any British edition of the 19th century, as it is so common today. Whymper's clasic was combined with another title, Down The Rhine, for a Two-Fer. Published by two diffferent publishers, Lippincott and Burrows, this is a beautiful 19th century book for a very reasonable price.
