Detailed Product Description
London, 1828-1829, 1st edition. 100's of pp, 109 steel engravings and maps. Folio. One of the finest and most desirable Alpine plate books; we have not had a copy this nice for fifteen years! Brockedon's maps and Alpine views are among the finest ever done. Original decorated red leather binding is in excellent condition. A superbly illustrated work on 12 mountain passes including the Little Saint Bernard, the Mont Genevre, the Mont Cenis, the Mont Saint Gothard, the Great Saint Bernard, the Monte Stelvio, the Cornice, the Grimsel and the Gries, the Bernardine and the Splugen, the Brenner, the Tende and the Argentiere and the Simplon, each pass with numerous illustrations and a map. The steel engravings were mostly produced by Finden and printed on India Paper then laid down on thick wove paper (common for the day ) each engraving has a blind printers stamp in the bottom margin.
 
The maps meanwhile are printed directly on wove paper,and engraved by I. Arrowsmith , they include hand color on the route. The map of the route from Genoa to Nice includes a tipped in correction slip. Neate B170. The painter Brockedon was a member of the Florence Art Academy and an inveterate traveler who in the course of his research traversed the Alps some 58 times. Murray's guide book used his information in their first handbook to the Swiss Alps. Neate lists 6 different sizes of this large book: this one stands 12' high. Light foxing, otherwise utterly Fine.
