London, 1852, 1st edition. 214 pp, map. 12mo. A journey to Kathmandu in 1851. A rare account of Nepal. Oliphant spent some of his early years in Ceylon, where his father was chief justice. In 1851 he was invited by Jung Bahadur to join a hunting excursion in Nepal, and it is this trip that forms the basis of the present work.

Oliphant was an eccentric Englishman who spent most of his life travelling the world, seeking adventures, and entering almost unknown Nepal in 1851 was certainly that. This book is one of the first on Nepal. Old Leather, binding with marbled boards. Covers rubbed, Very Good. (The only other copy we have found for sale in the world is listed now at almost $2000!)

Inside the front cover is the signature of R.S. Underhill, 1924. This may very well be Robert Underhill, husband of noted climber Miriam Underhill. One of the early rock star climbing couples. Robert is remembered for introducing European climbing techniques to the west coast of the US through an article in the 1931 Bulletin of the Sierra Club.
