Detailed Product Description
2008, 1st edition. 197 pp, may color photos. This is a new large format hardcover book celebrating Mount Arapiles, Australia's climbing mecca. Mount Arapiles (Djurite, is its  Aboriginal name - Jardwadjali language group) is a rugged scarp that screams up  surprisingly out of the dusty plains 350kms west of Melbourne in Victoria. It is  one of the finest climbing areas in the world and for any aspiring Australian climber it is an essential inclusion in their future plans. The book is a large format hardcover with a pictorial cover, No dust jacket was issued. Our copies are SIGNED and dated 2008 by the author, Keith Lockwood.

From a distance, its finely detailed surface appears as if is made of millions of  orange, yellow and grey Lego blocks. Or perhaps a huge cowpat. Many climber on first sight has expressed grave doubts as to its quality. It is, admittedly, an  unlikely looking super cliff. But anyone put off by its original appearance soon  realises that this ungainly looking crag is absolutely wonderful to climb on, at all grades. The fact that good climbs, at ALL grades, exist here, makes Arapiles quite unique as cliffs go, most areas being good for easy rambling climbs or  short hard desperates, but very rarely both!

All serious Australian climbers stop what they are doing three times each day to face toward Arapiles and genuflect. Those who have made the pilgrimage to central-west Victoria are accorded special respect and are given the title Haji.

With more than 2,000 climbs, Arapiles has the highest concentration of high-quality climbing in the country - and some of the best routes anywhere on the planet. For a moment in climbing history, it boasted the hardest route in the world: Punks in the Gym (31).

Don't expect to see lots of bolts, but the natural protection is exceptional on routes that range up to 120-metre-tall (longer on the traverses) multipitch classics.

Here is a letter from Henry Barber to Climbing Magazine about the new book:

'I just got back from a climbing and lecture trip to Australia where I got to visit with all my friends from over the years. Keith Lockwood from Natimuk has just released a fantastic book called Arapiles a million mountains. I think your readers should be aware of it. Here in the USA we are aware of the diversity and heritage of Yosemite from John Muir to recent conservation efforts, as well as it allure for climbers as kind of a Mecca.

Arapiles deserves the same attention as it has been a destination for legions of climbers from around the world. This book is a well balanced portrait of a unique geological formation, with great history, flora, fauna and a colorful climbing history. Peter Croft, Wolfgang Gullich, Kim Carrigan, Didier Raboutou, Lynn Hill (and Henry Barber of course) as well as many other climbers put in their two cents worth. The pictures are great and anyone traveling to a distant climbing area such as this should revel in knowing that it represents more than just hard pulling down.'
