Detailed Product Description

This is a full uncut sheet of 40 brand new, old style New Zealand $5 bills, that shows the image of Sir Edmund Hillary on the front. It is boldly signed by Ed Hillary in in black marker, on the center $5 bill, and these are original style paper bills, not the new polymer conterfeit proof bills.

The Hillary $5 bills were introduced in 1992, and became an instant collectible among mountaineering enthusiasts, as the image of Sir Edmund Hillary gave incredible prestige to our usually invisible activity of mountaineering. Ed Hillary is certainly the best known and most respected figure in all of mountaineering, and to honor a living person in this way shows how proud New Zealand, and indeed the world, is of him.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand issued these full sheets of 40 $5 bank notes all on one day in 1992. 250 were sold in Auckland and 250 in Wellington, only one to a customer. and are enclosed in a cardboard tube stating the contents. They are very rare, even in New Zealand, and we are very lucky to have obtained one.

Sir Ed told us that the NZ legislature actually passed a special bill to allow him to sign the bills, as defacing currency is against the law in NZ!
