This book confines itself to the higher peaks of the Cascade Mountains along the Pacific Northwest Coast of America. It has separate chapters for each of the following peaks:
Each of these peaks is presented, starting from their initial discovery and including their original names, where applicable; and taken through the trails and climbing hints for attaining the tops. Air flights into or out of Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington practically use these towering peaks as guides during ascent and descent. In milder times, the bases of these peaks offer the finest in mountain meadows, wildlife, fishing and scenic views. To the natives of the past, these peaks were regarded as homes of their gods and many of them bear names attesting to the residents of each.
But whatever the age, or the beliefs of the people, these magnificent structures are constant reminders of the changes that brought them and of the future changes which may await them in the future. The photographs offered in the book are excellent, and in the case of several (Mount St. Helens and Garibaldi), show profiles which are no longer available due to natures work.
