London, 1927, 1st edition. 319 pp, 48 plates (174 figures), 16 text ills, map. For 23 summer seasons the author studied the forms of snow and ice in the Alps of Central Europe and took a large number of photographs to illustrate his subject. His book explains much on the nature and geological character of the Alps.
The author was an authority on ice crystalization. Initial chapters are concerned with the chemistry and optics of ice and snow, (with a section on artificial snow), and with glaciers and the geology and topography of the Alps. The (slightly) greater part of the book is then concerned with climbs and traverses of the alpine regions, made by the Author and others, and with notes concerning the weather, changes to glaciers over time etc. This copy in its original blue cloth, minor edge wear, Near Fine.
