London, 1934, 5th printing. 279 pp, 57 photos. This first flight over Everest was as big a news story at the time as the climbing expeditions. The team made 2 flights over Everest and one over Kangchenjunga, taking the first aerial photos of the peak. This UK edition includes a 3D photo of Everest with 3 D glasses to look through, a feature lacking in the USA edition.
The purpose of the Everest Flight was to demonstrate that the aeroplane and the air camera could be made the means of acquiring important knowledge which would otherwise be unobtainable; it was also a feat of daring and endurance. The successful completion of the expedition was due to the months of hard work in the UK and India in 1932 and 33; the resultant efforts provided a strip map culminating in the summit of Everest and considerably enhanced meteorological knowledge. A fascinating book detailing the entire planning, funding and execution of a world-first operation.
