London, 1893, 3rd UK edition. 389 pp, 9 plates, 18 ills, map. One of the early Dolomites classics. Decorated brown cloth.
After her first travel book, a childrens picture book of Belguim, Edwards decided to go farther afield. In 1872 she set off with a friend to make a tour of the Dolomite mountains. As there were no roads, they travelled by railroad, horseback and on foot. Her account of her travels was first published in 1873 as 'Untrodden Peaks and Unfrequented Valleys' and it was so popular that it was reprinted several times under the 'Midsummer Ramble.
This is her account of her 1872 tour of the Dolomite Mountains of northern Italy. She updated travellers' information as necessary for this 2nd edition, noting a few improved roads, etc. In general, however, 'the passes are too long and too fatiguing for ladies on foot, and should not be attempted by any who cannot endure eight and sometimes ten hours of mule-riding.' Describes in detail the mountains, towns, and many beautiful sights, plus day-to-day events and the people they encountered.
Chapters include: Monte Generoso to Venice; Venice to Longarone; Longarone to Cortina; At Cortina; Cortine to Pieve di Cadore; Auronzo and Val Buona; Caprile; At Caprile; To Agordo and Primiero; Primiero to Predazzo; The Fassa Thal and the Fedaja Pass; The Sasso Bianco; Forno di Zoldo and Zoppe; and Caprile to Botzen. Includes nice subtly-colored map showing the author's travel route ('Map of the Central Dolomites of Southern Tyrol').
