From the dust jacket: “In 1980 the Chinese government opened parts of the mountain provinces for the first time. This vast region–an area as large as the western United States–had been seen by very few occidentals since the silk traders traversed it in Maro Polo’s time: from 1950 until 1980 it was completely sealed off from foreign travel. Galen Rowell was among the first to travel there on assignment for National Geographic.
GALEN ROWELL and his photographs won many awards including the Ansel Adams Award.
