Detailed Product Description
NZ, 2011, 1st edition. 264 pp, 16 pp color photos. For over three decades Pat Deavoll has been climbing at the elite level of her sport, in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, in the Canadian Rockies and Alaska, as well as undertaking extreme, world-class expeditions to the great mountain ranges of Central Asia, including the Himalayas and the Karakorum.

In Wind from a Distant Summit she tells of her beginnings in the mountains of New Zealand, and of how far a singular level of drive, determination and talent has taken her. There are few mountaineers in New Zealand, women or men, who have managed her level of achievement and who have climbed so hard for so long.

Wind from a Distant Summit is a rich and compelling story with enough humanity and insight to make this a wonderful read for anyone interested in the possibilities of an adventurous life. New paperback [only edition].

SIGNED by Pat Deavoll

Pat Deavoll was raised on a farm in North Canterbury and educated in Christchurch. She began mountaineering in her late teens and, after a break when she also became one of New Zealand's leading whitewater kayakers, has continued to climb at the elite level for decades. She worked as an outdoor instructor for many years before retraining as a journalist. Currently she works as the Activities & Events Coordinator for the New Zealand Alpine Club in Christchurch
From Colin Monteath:

'A succinct, evocative piece of writing that is skillfully crafted and well researched, with pertinent historical and cultural background, especially on much-maligned Pakistan. Great passion shines through every chapter....for her partners, her climbs and for her beloved India, Pakistan and China....carefully chosen words from the heart.

'Great chapter on the importance of a climbing partnership...the best I've read...and so often overlooked. Comprehensive chapter on history/influence of women mountaineers in New Zealand and their impact in the Greater ranges. Much needed perspective on the alpine career of the late Karen McNeill and update on the remarkable guiding/explorations of Julie Ann-Clyma.

'Superb descriptions of the highs and very real lows of expedition life when attempting new routes in Himalaya, Karakoram and Alaska. There is no 'instant success' in alpinism and in Pat's case it is clear from the writing that her achievements stem from dedication and perseverance - a dogged determination to build on a long apprenticeship of travel, treks and easier climbs in Asia as a younger woman....honed in more recent years by hard technical training on waterfall ice in Canada and winter routes in New Zealand.

'Well thought through debates - among them the place of bottled oxygen in the high mountains and on the morality and ethics of modern guided expeditions to 8000m peaks...mixed with comments from Pat's international climbing partners. These side issues help to put Pat's relentless drive into perspective (pushing through severe injury to knees etc) as she continues her quest as a 50 year old for new routes on remote 6-7000m peaks. The writing is at its most powerful and intimate when she deals with the demon of mental health issues, accentuated after she retreats shy of a summit - the perception of 'failure' weighs heavy. For Pat, success on a virgin summit has often been achieved only by expedition after hard-won expedition...but, in this book, she gets it right first time. ' Price approximate
