CA, 1997, 1st edition. 388 pp, 174 photos, 58 maps, 55 figures. An exhaustive modern study of the geology of Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. This studies the mountain landscape and how these landscapes have changed over time. Includes many illustrations and charts and line drawings. Large format (8'x10') paperback, as New.

Schaffer's book is a fresh look at one of the paradigms of glacial geomorphology - that mountain glaciers are capable of large-scale erosion and create the valleys that they lie in. He concludes that they generally do not. He based this on more than a decade of field work in the Sierra Nevadas (more field work in this range that any other geologist - dead or alive). However, there is disagreement in the scientific community with the conclusions of Schaffer's work.
