This was Washburn's first full-size book and it conveys a youthful energy and passion for exploring that would continue well past normal 'retirement' age.
Washburn went on to pioneer major Alaskan climbs including the first ascent of the 'normal' route up Mt McKinley. He is responsible for the definitive maps of Mt Everest, Mt McKinley, the Grand Canyon, and New Hampshire's Presidential Range. He was director for the Boston Museum of Science and was elected in 1985 Honorary Director for Life. He is world-renowned for his unmatched crystal clear photography of mountains, especially for those of mountains in Alaska and the Alps.
He held honorary doctorates from ten colleges and universtities and was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and London's Royal Geographical Society. He was also awarded the National Geographic Society's highest honor, The Centennial Medal, granted for outstanding contributions to geographical exploration.
