Bahamas, 1942, 1st edition. 48 pp, 30 ills (22 b/w, 8 color). DJ, Near Fine. This edition is of interest in being published in the Bahamas, during the darkest days of WWII. I dont know of the British did this to sell copies in America, or because they felt they might lose the war and retreat to the new world!

An excellent and well illustrated description of the principal British mouintaineers of the pre-World War II era. 'Mr. F. S. Smythe here tells the story of the sport of mountaineering from the early days of the Alpine Club. He describes the sensation caused by Albert Smith's ascent of Mont Blanc and tells the fascinating story of the conquest of the Matterhorn in 1865 by Whymper and Hudson, a short-lived triumph ending in disaster. Mr. F. S. Smythe is well known as the conqueror of Mount Kamet, and was a member of the three Mount Everest expeditions in 1933, 1936 and 1938. In addition to the Himalayas he has made many climbs in the Alps.' --From the dust jacket.

Frank Sydney Smythe was an extremely gifted and well-travelled mountaineer who wrote many very popular books about mountaineering during the first half of the last century. He achieved prominence in mountaineering circles following two impressive seasons in the Alps in 1927 and 1928. He subsequently climbed extensively in the Himalayas. In 1931 F Smythe and other members of the expedition climbed Kamet in the Himalayas. At 25,442-feet it was the highest mountain then climbed.

Following that success he was invited to join the 1933 British Mount Everest Expedition during which he climbed to 28,200 feet on the north side of the mountain without oxygen.
