Detailed Product Description
2011. 60 minutes, all region DVD. In the 1960’s there was a small sub-culture of climbers who went against the traditional mountaineering mentality. Headed by John Gill, a few climbers devoted themselves to bouldering and turned it into a kind of gymnastic art. Pat Ament’s film tells the story of those beginnings, that golden age of bouldering, yet in a tender, nostalgic way. He looks back but also delves into the current lives of the individuals, now that they have aged, a film that deals more with matters of the heart than with matters of muscle and machismo.

John Gill was so far ahead of his time the best climbers of the day didn’t believe the stories they heard. Rumors had a man able to fly through air from one finger-hold to another. People came across small white chalk arrow drawn below impossible-looking faces of rock. The mysterious Gill moved through the forest of various climbing areas, leaving not only the chalk arrow but chalked holds up rock no one else could begin to ascend.

A competitive rope climber at Georgia Tech, Gill could climb a rope to the top of a tall gym in 3.8 seconds. That’s faster than a normal person can pull a rope of that length through the hands. Gill taught himself the one-arm, one-finger pull-up and invented the one-arm front lever. He was not simply a show of strength, however. Along with balance and technique, Gill has always been a man of virtue and humility.

When Pat Ament, a university gymnast and pioneer boulderer himself, wrote the book “Master of Rock,” Gill’s Biography, the climbing community learned what it would take to reach the highest echelons of pure rock climbing and, at the same time, aspire to being – as Gill – the highest quality of person.

On the recommendation of many people, Pat Ament at last decided to digitize his original, classic 16mm footage of Gill and also his ancient footage of the amazing Jim Holloway, the only film that captures both of these two champions of bouldering when they still were in their prime. Gill has called Holloway the best boulderer ever, as has John Bachar. Pat captured Holloway on several of Jim’s most difficult routes, before Jim developed health problems and had to give up bouldering. This footage alone is a priceless historical artifact. Old images come alive, restored and preserved in high definition.

Pat’s vision, however, has not been simply to preserve that critical footage but also build a new film around it. His efforts have resulted in a gorgeous, nostalgic piece that remembers the golden age of bouldering and chronicles its development and central characters. Featured are all the original, most significant pioneers of bouldering and the true disciples of Gill.

Barry Bates, for example, the best California boulderer in the later 1960’s, known for his exploits in Yosemite and at Pinnacles, and known also for his quiet, genial spirit, has never until now been interviewed. His lovely insights are invaluable. Also legendary Greg Lowe, the remarkable Utah master boulderer and climber, has not until now been interviewed. He and Gill sit together and muse about time and its passing.

Included are commentaries by Jim Holloway himself, Rich Goldstone, a Gunks based disciple of Gill’s, and Jeff Lowe. Ament also, another partner to Gill and Colorado’s best boulderer during the golden age, provides a humble portrayal of his own bouldering exploits.

The film is beautifully framed by climbing done by Pat with his eight-year-old daughter Anna, a dialogue unscripted and spontaneous, in which he shares with this beautiful young spirit things about his past, and his experience with Gill, along with speculation about her future. Professor Jan Sacherer calls the film a masterpiece. .” Pat also composed and performs the music for the film, highly praised by all who have heard it.
