2011. In 1960, just two years after Warren Harding's breakthough first ascent of the Nose of El Capitain in Yosemite, another big wall was climbed in Colorado, the Diamond of Longs Peak. Unlike El Capitan, it was at high altitude, with the danger of summer snow storms. Although numerous climbers wanted to attempt the climb, two interlopers from California were the first to jump through the arduous hoops that the NPS put up to discourage climbers, and tripled up on potential rescue teams.

Bob Kamps and Dave Rearick were veterans of the hard free climbing and big wall aid climbing going on in Yosemite Valley, and were a part of the California crowd that included Yvon Chouinard and Royal Robbins. They knew they could do the Diamond climb, and in fact had virtually no difficulties with their chose route, now called D1. The climb was covered by newspaper reporters from the base and summit of the climb, and the climb made national news, and even Time magazine.

From Kamps' archive of newspaper clippings, old photos, and Rearick's collection of vintage gear, Kamps wife, Bonnie, has put together a Ken Burns like film of the climb on DVD, which captures the excitement of doing a hard new route in Colorado when it was still consdiered unclimbable by many. 40 minutes, DVD.
