World ClassSimon Carter reaffirms his position as Australia's top climbing photographer.
Rock Climbing in Australia is a tour de force. The first book of its type published in Australia, it is the most outstanding collection of climbing photos I've seen from any country, let alone the work of a single photographer.
The dramatic cover photo indicates that you're in for an exciting experience: open the cover and the photo reproduced across the end papers shows you that Carter has taken a whole new approach to climbing photography-the successful depiction of rock gymnastics as part of the wider Australian landscape.
No effort has been spared in producing a book that does justice to its remarkable photos. Design, reproduction, materials-all are of the highest quality. Rock Climbing in Australia features 23 climbing areas, each introduced by a local aficionado. Carter has done well to cover so many areas, from Kalbarri in Western Australia to Frenchmans Cap in Tasmania. All major areas except Tasmania's Flinders Island are represented, however, New South Wales is probably over represented.
The book includes plenty of photos of climbs that we can all aspire to do although there are more climbs in higher grades. Most of the photos are outstanding. Not surprisingly, a fair percentage of them have been published before, notably in Carter's calendars (including the new-approach 1999 edition). The new material is equally excellent in most cases.
Carter has done Australian climbing a service with the publication of Rock Climbing in Australia.
With the rugged Australian landscape providing opportunities for the novice and experienced rock climber alike, both Australian and international climbers are increasingly experiencing the beauty of Australia and its many spectacular sites.
Rock Climbing in Australia presents a stunning panorama of images of climbers in action on some of the most difficult and awe-inspiring climbs Australia has to offer. Whether you wish to enjoy the sheer elation of rock climbing in Australia from the safety and comfort of your armchair, or whether you are ready to get out there and take on new challenges, Rock Climbing in Australia provides an inspiring and informative profile of Australia's key rock climbing regions.
