SIX MOIS DANS L'HIMALAYA LE KARAKORUM ET L'HINDU-KUSH: VOYAGES ET EXPLORATIONS AUX PLUS HAUTES MONTAGNE DU MONDE [SIX MONTHS IN THE HIMALYA, KARAKORAM AND HINDU KUSH: TRAVELS AND EXPLORATIONS IN THE WORLD'S HIGHEST MOUNTAINS].
Neuchatel, 1904, 1st edition. 363 pp, 10 plates, 269 photos in the text, maps, panorama. In French. Perhaps the first attempt on an 8000 meter peak, K2, and one steeped in legend, as the team included Oscar Eckenstein and the mysterious Aleister Crowley. Jacot-Guillarmod was Swiss. The 8 person team ascended the Godwin Austen (Baltoro) Glacier, and several routes were tried. The highest altitude reached was 7300 meters. It was a poorly organized expedition, but set the stage for the Duke of Abruzzi's large scale attempt 7 years later.
Eckenstein and Crowley both mention this expedition in their [rare] books, and this book is even scarcer than theirs, as it had no English edition. Two years later the author organized an expedition to Kangchenjunga. Originally bound in wrappers, this copy has an old (contemporary) full cloth binding, with marbled boards. The original wrapper cover is included, bound in, and new condition. The book and maps are in excellent condition. Overall a Fine copy of one of the scarcest books on Karakoram climbing.
